What is Upward Bound?

Upward Bound was the first TRIO program which emerged out of the Economic Opportunities Act of 1964 in response to the administration's War-on-Poverty.

The GOAL of the Upward Bound Program is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.

Qualifications
  • Students must be:

  • Low Income 

  • Potential First Generation college student 

  • In the 9th  - 11th grade

  • Possess at least a 2.5 GPA

  • Interested in obtaining a postsecondary degree

Services Provided by Upward Bound

The Upward Bound program consists of an Academic Year Component and a six-week Summer Residential Component.

During the Academic Year (September - May) students meet semi-monthly for academic enrichment which includes:

  • Academic instruction in Math, English, Reading and Literature

  • ACT Prep

  • Act Vouchers

  • On-line FAFSA Completion

  • Career Orientation

  • Financial Literacy Workshops

  • Scholarship information

  • Academic tutoring

During the six-week Summer Residential Component (June-July) participants reside on the UAPB Campus and receive the following:

  • Academic instruction in Math, English, Science, Foreign Language and Computer Technology

  • Mentoring

  • Tutoring

  • Work Study

  • Recreational Activities

Cultural Enrichment and College Tours

Upon completion of the program Students who qualify may participate in a Summer Bridge Program.
